Shikamana School

In May 2007 Mrs Anstee and her husband went on holiday to Kenya. When they were there they visited a small rural school and orphange called Peace Village School. They were amazed by the school. The staff and children made Diane and Kev feel so welcome. Everyone was so happy even though they had so little compared to Houghton Primary School.
When she returned to Houghton, Mrs Anstee told us all about her experiences and about Peace Village School. The School Council decided to make the school it's focus for fund raising and over the year raised over £600. Mrs Anstee also worked with Mr Shepherd's class and together they developed links between the children in our school and the children in Peace Village School.
In July 2008, Mrs Anstee and her husband returned to Kenya and Peace Village School. They were again amazed by what they saw. The school is now being supported by an American charity (working with Cher - the pop star) and have managed to move to a better site. It has been renamed: Shikamana School. Mrs Anstee liaised with the charity workers and staff of the school to find out what they would like from our fund raising. They have asked for it to be spent on text books so that the teachers can improve their teaching. We think that this is a great idea and have made arrangements for this to happen.
Mrs Anstee also took letters written by our children together with photos of our school.
We are aiming to continue with our support and links to this amazing school over the coming year and hope that you will continue to help.
Latest Update
Amanda Epstein, the African Project consultant for the Endeavour Group (the charity responsible for Shikamana School) has been in touch and sent us an update on some of the children at the school. Please click here to read her update.
Amanda says that they are in desperate need of text books for the children. Currently they are sharing one book between 4 or 5 children and would like to be able to purchase more so that they can have one between two. We will be making collections after our Christmas Performances this year with this in mind. We hope that you will be able to support.
Here are some photographs from Mrs Anstee's latest visit...
